Andre Kertesz

Kertesz was a well-known Hungarian photographer who lived in Hungary, France, and then America. I love his use of distortion. I also like the photographs he takes of people jumping, which makes the image feel as if he walked into someone’s life, where that person is alive and moving. When he took pictures, he probably thought about how it would impact the viewer, since he exposed his work, and about capturing the beauty in the world around him. He thought about his photographs as works of art that would be framed. He seems to know or wait for what he is going to photograph.

Vivian Maier

Maier did black and white street photography in the 1950s to the 1970s in Chicago and New York, as well as in countries she visited. She took photographs of the world around her in a very direct way, without thinking too much about the shock value. In every image there is something interesting going on, although it is not it is not always apparent at the first glimpse. She took a lot of images of people, especially children. She did some photographs in color, but I feel like color takes away from her work since she is talented in composition, angle, subject matter and framing. I think that she wanted to capture what she saw, what she found interesting and what she considered important and beautiful. Her work feels like what one could see if one walked out on the street, for example, two people walking, with a lamp post blocking part of their bodies. Her photographs feel unrehearsed and real.
